Another way of communicating: Costumes for the Mi Vieja Mula murga, Carnival 2023
Mi Vieja Mula’s 2023 show was called “El payaso Vinagre” (The sad clown). It was about a murga made up of conservative, complaining, and somewhat washed-up performers. A discourse laden with humor and acidity that concealed a sharp criticism of those who defend the idea that “the past was better.”
In keeping with the theme, both the costumes and makeup enhanced the text and the murga’s performance. The effect was to see a group on stage that looked like it had come out of an old movie. Everyone was dressed in shades of gray, white, and black, from head to toe. A functional composition for the story of these stale characters, quite far from the typical colorful carnival but without losing the essence of the murga.
The costume design was by Camila Suárez and the makeup by Luciana Ortelli. The costumes were made by Elena Plachot, Agustina Cedrés, Camila Castro, Alina Kramarenko, Gaia Marichal, and Camila Suárez. This work was awarded by the jury of the official 2023 carnival contest, which gave it a mention for “Creative Costume Design.”

O espetáculo da Mi Vieja Mula em 2023 chamava-se “El payaso Vinagre” (O palhaço triste). Era sobre uma murga composta por artistas conservadores, reclamões e um tanto decadentes. Um discurso carregado de humor e acidez que escondia uma crítica afiada àqueles que defendem a ideia de que “antes era melhor”.
Em consonância com o tema, tanto os trajes quanto a maquiagem realçavam o texto e a performance da murga. O efeito era ver um grupo no palco que parecia ter saído de um filme antigo. Le spectacle 2023 de Mi Vieja Mula s’intitulait « El payaso Vinagre » (Le clown triste). Il racontait l’histoire d’une murga composée d’artistes conservateurs, râleurs et quelque peu has-been. Un discours empreint d’humour et d’acidité qui dissimulait une critique acerbe de ceux qui défendent l’idée que « le passé était meilleur ».
En accord avec le thème, les costumes et le maquillage ont renforcé le texte et la performance de la murga. L’effet obtenu était celui d’un groupe sur scène qui semblait tout droit sorti d’un vieux film. Tout le monde était habillé dans des tons de gris, de blanc et de noir, de la tête aux pieds. Une composition fonctionnelle pour l’histoire de ces personnages vieillots, assez éloignée du carnaval coloré typique, mais sans perdre l’essence de la murga.
